One Year Wedding Anniversary

Last month, I celebrated my one year wedding anniversary. I truly can’t believe that it’s been a year already!

Will and I wanted to do something special to remember certain elements from our wedding day – all within the comfort of our home. I’m happy to say that it was a romantic success and we had a lot of fun pulling it all together. In case you’re wondering exactly how we celebrated it, you’re in luck because I’m giving you a quick peak today.

Centerpiece: A couple days before our anniversary, we visited the florist we used on our wedding day and asked them to replicate our centerpiece. Carnations and mason jars were a part of our big day. While wedding planning, our main goal was to keep it simple and we loved the way it turned out. The mason jars served as additional party favors. In fact, our guests still enjoy them today, utilizing them as cups for drinks – one of my favorite things to drink out of.

Cake: Our wedding cake had three different fillings (oreo mousse, chocolate mouse and vanilla). We chose not to freeze the top layer of the cake for a year (a wedding tradition), so similar to the centerpiece, we called our wedding baker in advance and placed an order for 3 smash cakes. I wasn’t familiar with these at the time, but they’re super cute 5 inch cakes. A week after our anniversary, we hosted a video event so that some friends and family can view our wedding video for the first time, and we still had enough cake to share with them.

Champagne Flutes and Cutting Knives: One of the gifts from my parents were personalized champagne flutes and cutting knives (pictured above). It’s was nice to use them again. I hold them very dear to my heart.

Greeting Cards: The ones you see above (in addition to the one below) are anniversary cards, and if you’ve read my Greeting Card Decor post, you may recognize them.

Our anniversary landed on Easter this year so we were able to enjoy a beautiful service at the same church where we exchanged our vows. I wore a yellow lace dress, Will’s favorite color, and he wore a purple tie, my favorite color. I also wore my wedding day hairpin.

Now we can’t forget the most exciting part. Exchanging gifts! We decided to take the traditional wedding gift route, and the one year anniversary theme is paper. Here’s an overview of what we gave each other:

– I created a customized photobook for him using Shutterfly. The theme of his vows centered around different ways I’ve made him smile throughout our relationship. So with that, I entitled the book “When You Smile”, focusing on other things in his life that make him smile and ended it with his vows to me.

– If you don’t already know, I’m obsessed with Audrey Hepburn. He bought me an incredible biography of Audrey autographed by the author, stationary from Papyrus (another one of my obsessions) and a personalized stamp.

It was such an incredible day that we commemorated with a video, which we hope to do every year.

Hope you enjoyed this special post.

Until next time…

Blog Update

If you follow me on Facebook, Instagram and/or Pinterest, you may have noticed that I’ve been including more home decor related posts. When I first created this blog, my goal was to inspire others to be more receptive to natural/organic brands and to give people with curly hair the confidence they need and deserve. Although this still holds true and is something that I hold dear to my heart, I have also realized that I’m very loyal to products. I’m not high maintenance when it comes to hair and makeup, and once I find something that works for me and that I trust, I don’t continue to try and test different products. In fact, I have a pretty neutral makeup routine that is consistent from day-to-day. Believe it or not, it took me some time to realize this. This is not to say that I’ve sworn off any new brands, but for the most part, my facial, hair and makeup routines have remained the same.

I’ve mentioned something similar in the past, but to me Bashful Beauty Blog is a place for all things beauty. Beauty in fashion, home decor, travel, makeup, hair and just life in general. The reason I’m sharing this with you is because I didn’t want you to feel like I’ve forgotten about my readers or question why I don’t post more frequent makeup and hair posts. Rest assured, those topics are still important to me and will still be featured here.

With that said, I hope you guys will enjoy the new and approved blog.

In the coming weeks, you’ll get a peek inside my kitchen, I’ll share how I celebrated my one year wedding anniversary and I’ll show you the finished product of DIY project I’m currently working on with my husband.

Let me know what you think about the new direction of my blog in the comments below. Also, don’t forget to friend me on Facebook and follow me on Instagram and Pinterest.

Time to grab that camera and travel bag. And remember, live life and do what you love. Until next time…

Lighweight Products for Curly Hair

Today I wanted to share two new curly hair products that I’ve been obsessed with lately.

Last month I scheduled a haircut appointment at Christo NYC, home to the Curlisto Natural Curls line, and was introduced to the Defining Lotion and Protein Boost. Believe me when I say that these products are nothing short of amazing. Lightweight, while still providing results.

After washing your hair, spray some Protein Boost on your hair, concentrating on the ends. Then, section your hair into three or four parts so that you can apply the Defining Lotion to additional mini sections. This will allow the product to fully saturate the hair. Even though I have curly hair, I don’t have thick hair (believe it or not), and I still think this step is important.

Although the products are a little pricey, you only need to apply small portions to get results. I’ve had my 16 fl oz bottle for about a month and I’ve only used a quarter of it. At that rate, this should last me about 3 or 4 more months. And if you’re curious, I now have medium length hair since getting my haircut.

Here’s a recent picture, which you’ve probably seen on Facebook and Instagram, if you follow me.

Vanity Knobs and Pulls

We’re halfway through the week, guys! Today I wanted to share an easy way to test out new vanity knobs and pulls in your bathroom before officially committing to drilled holes and screws. Sometimes you find that things look entirely different from what you had envisioned, so this is a no fuss way to ensure that you like it.

The secret is removal adhesive putty!

vanity knobs and pulls 01

My husband and I couldn’t decide between two pulls and one knob for our bathroom vanity, so we bought all three to test out over the weekend. Each item was less than $3 and with Home Depot’s lovely return policy, it made sense to hold off on making a decision.

So here’s a before shot of our vanity.

Now here are the 3 different options. We realized that we placed the pulls and knob too high, but we did position the one we decided to go with a bit lower, which you’ll see in the final look at the end.

Once we picked the one we liked best, the Mr. took his measurements to ensure that everything was aligned, positioned it a bit lower, then drilled the holes.

Although each piece of hardware had something that we liked, we decided to keep it simple since our bathroom is a bit small and we didn’t want to draw too much attention to it. We wanted a clean, simple look.

So without further adieu, here’s the winner…

I hope you like it! This is a great way to try out different looks without ruining your vanity/cabinets. You can find a removal adhesive putty on Amazon, Staples, and Walmart, to name a few, for less than $5.

Greeting Card Decor

I’d have to admit, I’m a sucker for greeting cards, and so is my husband. Shhh…don’t tell him I told you that.

It brings me nothing but pure joy to think that someone took the time to pick out a card for me for a special occasion, celebration or just because

If you feel the same way, then here’s a simple way you can create a keepsake for your personal cards. Simply get a cute memory box like the one pictured below and place the lid under the box. I purchased this one at Michaels craft store.  Then you’ll want to gather the greeting cards that you’d like to include and just place them in the box. I like to give them a slight tilt. Here’s the memory box that I keep in my living room. I recently placed some greeting cards that loved ones sent me for my one year wedding anniversary.    What do you think of this greeting card holder? I love that I was able to incorporate this into my decor. It’s a great reminder that I’m surrounded by unconditional love from family and friends.

Let me know what you think and tag me on Instagram if you make your own memory box. Enjoy!

Love Your Curls

A little over a week ago, my sister shared this amazing video by Dove with me. I couldn’t help but get emotional because I could relate to these girls. I remember wanting straight hair like everyone else I saw at school and bangs that wouldn’t frizz up once I stepped out the door. Yet, just as Dove wonderfully portrays in this video, we learn that curly hair is just as beautiful as straight hair when we see friends and loved ones leading by example. Growing up, my mom styled her natural curly hair every day and walked out the door with confidence. I never asked her why she didn’t straighten her hair because I thought (and still think) she is the most beautiful woman in the world.

Luckily, I’ve grown into the confident woman with curly hair that I saw, and continue to see, in my mom. Somehow that was instilled in me because instead of straightening my hair 365 days a year (although there’s nothing wrong with that for anyone who does), I leave my hair curly for most of the year. I don’t do it because I’m too lazy to go to a salon to get a blow out or to do it on my own; I do it because I really do love my hair and just like this video, I want to show others that it’s OK to let those spirals fall. I was so thrilled to see such a reputable brand like Dove take the time to say, “Love Your Curls” with this short, but amazingly inspiring clip.

How many of you love your curls?

Rent the Runway

New York City Wedding Photography | www.elevatepics.comAnother fashion post for you guys!

I’ve never been one to splurge on clothes, so when I decide to buy what I consider to be an expensive piece, I make it a point to determine whether or not it’s a trendy item. Trendy items will be out of style before you know it, so it’s best to really take this into account before swiping that card. I’d recommend investing in timeless pieces, such as a black blazer and black or nude pumps since these will never go out of style.

Now that’s not to say that I don’t swoon over high-end designer clothes, which is why I adore Rent the Runway. I’ve rented dresses from there for two weddings, as well as for my engagement photos.  Events/occasions like these are the best excuse to slip on a Kate Spade dress without breaking the bank. Nowadays, we tend to wear a dress to one event then cringe at the thought of pulling it out of our closets for another outing – mostly due to social media.  Imagine the horror if you wore the same dress on more than one occasion! Come on – I know you’ve been there!  Although I’m not ashamed to admit that I recycle outfits, on days when I want to slip on something new, this is the perfect alternative.

Have you ever tried Rent the Runway?

This past January, I celebrated a milestone birthday so I wanted to wear something that was a bit unique, yet still me. Now I’m not sure how many of you are Sex and The City fans, but I find myself, all too often, imagining that I’m typing away (sans a cigarette and column) things that I love to share. It’s undeniable that I love Carrie Bradshaw! So much so, that I decided to pull together a Carrie Bradshaw inspired ensemble for my birthday.

I changed it up a bit with a blush tulle skirt instead of the green color she donned in an episode where she was in Paris. I then decided to pair this with a polka dot top (I love polka dots), along with a statement necklace. And we can’t forget the shoes! Sorry, these are not Manolo Blahniks, but I hope Carrie wasn’t disappointed in my selection.

The main piece of my outfit was definitely the tulle skirt. I felt amazing in that skirt – feminine, sexy and confident. My pearl statement necklace was a classic touch.

What do you guys think of tulle skirts?

until next time…
